ROLE IMPACT
The Patient Access Specialist supports patients living with rare and orphan diseases by ensuring smooth access to prescribed therapies. This role is responsible for insurance benefits verification, claims adjudication, prior authorization support, refill management, and delivery coordination. Success is defined by timely, accurate patient support that ensures therapy adherence and positive treatment outcomes.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Conduct benefits investigations, process eligibility checks, and adjudicate pharmacy claims
• Communicate with providers on prior authorization requirements and assist throughout the PA process
• Manage inbound calls from patients, providers, and clinics regarding orders, services, and support options
• Document accurate, detailed notes in patient profiles to ensure compliance and continuity of care
• Coordinate refills and deliveries to support timely patient therapy adherence
• Report adverse events (AEs) and product complaints (PCs) promptly to clinicians
LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS
• Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) preferred; must be active, unrestricted, and in good standing
CLINICAL SKILL SET
• Insurance eligibility checks and prior authorization processing
• Claims adjudication and rejection troubleshooting
• Patient counseling on order status, coverage, and financial support
• Refill management and delivery scheduling
• Documentation of clinical notes in patient systems
• Communication with providers, patients, and payers
• Adverse event and product complaint reporting
• Microsoft Office applications and electronic medical record systems
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• High school diploma or equivalent
• 2+ years’ experience in pharmacy or healthcare setting
• Knowledge of insurance processes and pharmacy operations
• Strong computer proficiency and data entry accuracy
• Detail-oriented, collaborative, and patient-focused mindset
PREFERRED SKILLS
• Prior specialty or rare disease patient access experience
• Strong problem-solving and communication skills
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary team environment
